Assistant Coach Ronil Lal Carries Fiji’s Colors with Pride at FIFA U20 World Cup

Assistant Coach Ronil Lal, a key figure in the Digicel Fiji U20 National Team, is currently in Argentina for the FIFA U20 World Cup. With a wealth of experience and a passion for football, Lal has made significant contributions to the sport in Fiji.

Born in Labasa, the 45-year-old is a passionate individual with a love for football and education making him a perfect candidate as a coach . His official position is Assistant Coach for the Digicel Fiji U20 National Team, and he holds the role of Fiji Football Association Academy Head of Development for the North in Fiji.

Lal’s dedication and expertise have led him to work with various teams, including school teams, Northern Age group teams, and the Fiji Cup.

Lal’s journey in football began as the Head Coach for Labasa Youth, followed by coaching positions with the Dreketi Senior Team and the Labasa FA. He has also been involved with the Fiji U19 national team in 2016, 2018, and 2022, showcasing his commitment to nurturing young talent in the country.

Ronil finds inspiration in his wife, Reshmi, and his son, Ayaan. His football idol is his mentor and former player Steven Gerrard.

One of Ronil’s best moments in football was qualifying for the FIFA U20 World Cup as the Head Coach of the Digicel Fiji U19 National Team during the OFC U19 Championship in Tahiti last year.

“Qualifying for the FIFA U20 World Cup as the Head Coach stands out as a proud achievement for me. It ranks high on my list of achievements and I still can’t believe that we’ve come this far.”

Additionally, winning the 2020 IDC with the Labasa FA has been a memorable highlight. However, he also had his share of disappointments, with his worst moment being the loss in the OFC U19 Championship Final in 2022.

When asked about advice for youngsters, Ronil encourages them to believe in themselves, take pride in their endeavors, and always give their best effort. As for his personal preferences, Ronil’s favorite drink is coconut water, and his favorite food is fish curry.

Regarding his current experience at the World Cup, Ronil describes it as amazing. Seeing Fiji’s flag among the 24 nations participating in the FIFA U20 World Cup fills him with immense pride as a Fijian and a member of the U20 team.

“Arriving in Argentina and just experiencing all that we have so far has been an inspiring journey. From the moment we set foot on this land, we have been greeted with warm embraces, breathtaking sights, and rich culture. I get very emotional when I see our country’s flag unfurling proudly amongst the flags of the other 24 nations participating in the FIFA U20 World Cup. The feeling is indescribable.

“ Seeing this, I am reminded of the big honor it is to represent Fiji on the international stage. It is a testament to our collective efforts, dedication, and unwavering spirit that we have earned the opportunity to showcase our talents in this arena. To be chosen as part of the U20 team as an assistant coach fills me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.”

“This journey instills in me a responsibility to carry the dreams of our people to the FIFA U20 World Cup and uphold the values that define us as Fijians.”

In Argentina, amidst the intense matches and the collective pursuit of victory, Fiji finds itself writing a remarkable chapter in its nation’s sporting history having qualified for the second time. The first was in 2015 when the FIFA U20 World Cup was held in New Zealand.
