And the revival has been boosted by the interest from the students who have turned up in big numbers during the training sessions.
Coach Krishan Kumar is hopeful that his young squad will be able to make the school proud. He added that the support from his school management has been a major blessing to their campaign.
“Football was not been played in St Joseph’s school for some time now but the girls have been showing a lot of interest to play football this year and so we decided to revive it. We have a good squad of more than 40 players so far who are young players and devoted towards the training.
“I’m sure we will do well in the competition. I would also like to thank the school management for supporting us,” Kumar said.
The head coach says St Joseph plans to field a U-16 and U-18 side.
Fiji FA Development Officer and former National football rep Tama Vosuqa has been assisting in the training sessions. He believes in time these young squad would turn up to become quality players.
“The good thing is that these girls are very young, energetic and interested in football. Our job now is to teach them the basics of the game. We will continue to assist them,” Vosuqa said.
Fiji FA Technical Director Saiyad Ali says his department was in the process of establishing a Secondary schools women’s competition. Ali says few other schools have also shown interest to participate.
“The response so far has been good. Not only St Joseph’s but Suva Grammar is also interested and they also have begun their preparation. We are currently in the process of establishing a competition for them. I urge any other school who might be interested to contact us,” Ali said.
