Yaya: Back to Football

Yaya took a break from football in 2006 to take up referring after representing the national women’s side in the Oceania Under-20 playoffs. #Officiating at the 2010 Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants women’s competition inspired her return as later on she locked away her whistle to pick up the boots to represent Labasa at the Shariff Investment sponsored Women’s Inter District Championship in Suva. #A determined Yaya was selected in the extended Pacific Games squad and now after months of hard work has forced her way in the final 25-member squad.#“I represented the national U20 side in 2006 after which there was not many women’s competition so Finau #Vulivuli approached me to take up referring. I attended various referees course and officiated in matches but it was during the BOG last year when I was on the lines and I watched the other girls play, it inspired me to take up football again as I knew I was in the same age group as most of the other players.#“I missed out the Womens Nations Cup selection as I was away overseas attending a course but later on I played in the Labasa women’s side as I was told that I needed to participate in order to be selected in the Pacific Games squad.” #National women’s coach Usenio Logaivau, said he will later trim his 25-member squad to 20 which will travel to Noumea for the Pacific Games. #Yaya, said she is confident of making it into the final 20-member squad. #“I will be one of the players in the 20-member squad. I have got the fitness, skills and a heart to help Fiji Womens side bring a gold medal back. If given a chance I will give my 100% to make the country proud,” she said. # Fiji FA MEDIA#
